Eric Patino, Mableton, Georgia: SUV crosses I-20, hits two vehicles and overturns
Patino’s SUV was involved in a devastating accident on westbound I-20, resulting in a fatality and a multi-vehicle crash. The 31-year-old resident of Douglasville was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer when he unexpectedly crossed into oncoming traffic, causing a chain reaction collision. The sequence began when Patino’s vehicle struck a Nissan Frontier, followed by a collision with an Audi Q7.
Fortunately, the drivers and passengers in both vehicles managed to escape without injuries, exiting their cars safely after the impact. However, the crash took a tragic turn when Patino’s Explorer veered off the roadway after hitting the Audi. The SUV careened into a wooded embankment, flipping over onto its side amid the trees and brush. The force of the rollover was severe, and Patino was ejected from the vehicle during the overturn.
He was found at the scene, deceased from his injuries, with no signs of life. Emergency responders arrived quickly but were unable to revive him. The other drivers involved in the crash were able to pull their vehicles to the side of the highway and were unharmed, thanks to their quick reactions and the relatively minor nature of their collisions. The investigation into the crash indicates that Patino’s crossing into oncoming traffic was the primary cause of the multi-vehicle pileup.
Authorities are working to determine whether factors such as driver distraction, impairment, or other issues contributed to his loss of control. The scene was secured, and traffic was temporarily disrupted as crews cleared the wreckage. The tragic accident underscores the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of vigilance on busy highways. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and no charges have been filed at this time.
