MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — Two women were shot and killed in a murder-suicide in Manhattan Friday morning over an ongoing custody dispute, according to the NYPD.
The tragic incident unfolded near York Avenue and East 88th Street, close to Gracie Mansion in Yorkville, just before 9 a.m., as reported by NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. Authorities discovered one woman on the street behind a parked Honda Civic and the other on the sidewalk, both with gunshot wounds to the head.
The 45-year-old woman was immediately rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The shooter, a 65-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Disturbingly, a 1-year-old child was found in the backseat of the Honda Civic, fortunately unharmed during the incident, according to Kenny.
Investigations revealed that the women were embroiled in a heated custody dispute over the 45-year-old woman’s 4-year-old child. Despite the seriousness of the conflict, which had generated five domestic incident reports and two complaints, no arrests had ever been made, the police confirmed.
This incident underscores the devastating impact of unresolved custody battles and the dire need for effective intervention in domestic disputes to prevent such tragedies. The community is left in shock, grappling with the senseless loss of life and the traumatic aftermath for the surviving children.
This is a developing story, and further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
