David Booth Obituary : David Booth Cause of Death : WXOW/WQOW VP/GM David Booth Dies At 59

LA CRESCENT, Minn. (WXOW) – David Booth, Vice President and General Manager of WXOW/WQOW, passed away at the age of 59 on June 21, 2024. His passing marks the loss of a devoted father, husband, friend, community leader, mentor, and distinguished broadcaster.

David married the love of his life, Teri (Umsted) Booth, in September 1995 after meeting at WXOW. They shared 28 wonderful years together and were blessed with two children, Emma and Ryan.

David was deeply involved in the community. During his time in La Crosse, he served on various community boards and organizations, including as president of the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce and the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra.

His commitment to the community extended to his work at WXOW News19/WQOW News 18, where he oversaw coverage of events such as the WIAA state tournaments, Jefferson Awards, the annual UW-La Crosse vs UW-Eau Claire football game, and the installation of new Bishops in the Diocese of La Crosse. He championed numerous activities that highlighted the positive contributions of local individuals and organizations.

David’s broadcasting career spanned 37 years, beginning after his graduation from UW-Platteville in 1987 with a B.S. in Radio/Television Broadcast Management. He worked at several stations, including WQOW, KOLN/KGIN, and WHBF, before joining WXOW/WQOW in La Crosse in 1992.

He progressed from Local Sales Manager to General Sales Manager, and in April 2008, he became Vice-President/General Manager. David had a passion for the technical aspects of broadcasting and was known for his interest in new technologies and gadgets. He was one of the rare general managers who could discuss technical matters in detail with engineers.

David made a significant impact as a manager and mentor, providing guidance to many young broadcasters and journalists who began their careers at his station. His “Dave advice” and the opportunities he provided continue to resonate with many who have advanced in their careers or pursued other paths.

A former employee reflected, “Dave was always there to offer advice and understood the human side of working in news. During the holidays, he and Teri would bring meals for those working. His kindness and generosity left a lasting impression.”

Anna Engelhart, Vice-President and General Manager of sister station WKOW in Madison, remarked, “Dave was a true broadcaster who worked tirelessly to lead his teams in serving their communities. He was a great colleague and friend, always willing to offer advice. His impact on the community and our industry will endure for years. He will be missed.”

David’s funeral was held on Friday, June 28, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent, where he and his family resided.

David is survived by his wife Teri; daughter Emma; son Ryan; sister Shari (John) Filsinger of Verona, Wisconsin; many nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Ward and Betty Booth; in-laws Forrest and Karen Umsted; and brother-in-law Scott Umsted.

The end of his obituary reads, “This is not goodbye, it’s I’ll see you later.” - Dave Booth, 6/19/24.
