IOWA CITY, Iowa — An Iowa women's basketball team member is stepping away from the sport.
Ava Jones, a standout high school basketball player from Nickerson, Kansas, committed to Iowa in July 2022.
Shortly after, while she and her parents were walking on a sidewalk in Louisville, a driver veered off the road and struck them, causing serious injuries. Her father, Trey Jones, later passed away to his injuries.
Jones joined the Hawkeye program for the 2023-24 season but was not medically cleared to play.
She will now take a medical disqualification and retire from college basketball, according to the Iowa athletics department, though she will remain on scholarship.
“We wish Ava the best on the road to recovery and fully support the decision she made to step away from the game,” Iowa head coach Jan Jensen said in a statement from the athletic department.
“She worked tirelessly to get to this point, but she made the best decision for herself and her well-being.”
