Ford latest to face probe into driver-assist accident

In February, a tragic incident unfolded in Texas involving a Ford Mustang equipped with automated driving technology, as disclosed by the US's National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). 

This marks the second investigation into accidents involving Ford's "Blue Cruise" driver-assist system. 

Both incidents involved Mustang Mach Es colliding with stationary vehicles on freeways during nighttime.

Ford has reiterated that its assist systems are not intended to replace human drivers, emphasizing the importance of driver responsibility. 

While the company has refrained from commenting on the recent reports, it has affirmed its cooperation with the accident investigations, underscoring its commitment to safety.

Blue Cruise, touted for enabling 'hands-free' driving while overseeing steering, braking, and acceleration on highways, represents a significant stride in automotive technology.

However, the incidents underscore the ongoing scrutiny surrounding semi-automated vehicles and their safety records, a concern shared across the industry.

This scrutiny extends beyond Ford, as evidenced by recent developments involving Tesla. 

Just this week, Tesla reached a settlement in a case involving a fatal accident wherein one of its semi-autonomous cars was in operation with the 'Autopilot' system engaged. 

The resolution comes shortly before the case was set to go to trial, signaling Tesla's acknowledgment of the complexities surrounding autonomous driving technology and the need for resolution.

Previously, Tesla had maintained that the driver bore responsibility for the accident, alleging that they were distracted by playing a video game and failed to assume control of the vehicle before the collision. 

The settlement, however, reflects a departure from this stance, highlighting the multifaceted challenges inherent in semi-automated driving systems.

These incidents serve as poignant reminders of the evolving landscape of automotive technology and the imperative of ensuring robust safety measures.
