On Sunday, July 21st, 2024, at approximately 8:38 p.m., East Division officers responded to a severe collision involving two motor vehicles and three pedestrians on Simpson Avenue in Bowmanville. The incident began when a grey Hyundai sedan, traveling south on Simpson Avenue, collided with a grey Hyundai Tucson SUV, also heading south.
Following the collision, the sedan lost control, mounted the curb, and struck three pedestrians, including an infant. Tragically, a male pedestrian was transported to a Toronto-area trauma center, where he was pronounced deceased. A female pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. The infant pedestrian sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized. The female passenger in the SUV experienced minor injuries.
A 22-year-old male from Clarington has been charged with several offenses, including:
- Impaired Operation Causing Death
- Impaired Operation Causing Bodily Harm (x3)
- Dangerous Driving Causing Death
- Dangerous Driving Causing Bodily Harm (x3)
- Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance
The suspect was held for a bail hearing. Members of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit conducted a thorough investigation at the scene. Roads in the area were closed for several hours as evidence was collected.
