PHILADELPHIA — A tragic accident claimed the life of a 30-year-old woman, identified as Barbara Friedes, after she was struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle on Wednesday evening, according to Philadelphia Police. The fatal crash occurred around 7 p.m. at 1800 Spruce St.
Barbara Friedes, a resident physician at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), was riding her bike westbound in the designated bike lane on Spruce Street when the accident happened.
The vehicle that struck her was also traveling westbound on Spruce Street. The impact of the collision threw Friedes about 20 feet from the point of impact. Despite wearing a helmet, she suffered severe head trauma. Police officers at the scene provided immediate aid.
Friedes was swiftly transported to Jefferson Hospital, but despite the medical team's best efforts, she was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m.
In addition to the vehicle that struck Friedes, two other vehicles were also involved in the crash, though details on their involvement remain unclear.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Friedes was identified as a 68-year-old man. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any charges will be filed against him, as the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing.
