Taylor Zakhar Perez on Coping with His Sister's Kristy Death

Taylor Zakhar Perez has opened up about the profound loss of his sister, revealing the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding her passing. The 32-year-old star of "Red, White & Royal Blue" spoke candidly about the emotional toll of filming the hit romantic comedy alongside Joey King, his co-star from "The Kissing Booth" series, for Variety's Actors on Actors series.

Reflecting on the filming process, Perez couldn't help but become emotional as he recounted the loss of his sister, Kristy, who tragically succumbed to colorectal cancer complications in June of 2023 at the age of 44. Describing Kristy as the "glue" that held their family together, Perez expressed the difficulty of working on "Red, White & Royal Blue" knowing that it premiered just two months after her passing, robbing her of the chance to see his work.

Approaching the one-year mark since Kristy's passing, Perez highlighted the challenge of balancing personal grief with professional obligations, acknowledging the temptation to immerse oneself in work as a distraction. However, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing family amidst the demands of the creative industry, a sentiment echoed by King.

Perez also revealed the touching tribute to his sister in the end credits of "Red, White & Royal Blue," aptly named "For Kristy." The gesture, initiated by director and co-writer Matthew López, served as a poignant acknowledgment of Perez's loss and the profound impact his sister had on his life.

In the wake of Kristy's passing, Perez took to social media to pay tribute to her, underscoring her anticipation of seeing "Red, White & Royal Blue" and her enduring presence in their lives. Despite the pain of her absence, Perez finds solace in honoring her memory and cherishing the time they shared.

As Perez prepares for the sequel to "Red, White & Royal Blue," he does so with the memory of his beloved sister close to his heart, navigating both his personal grief and professional endeavors with resilience and grace.
