A Lufkin man was taken into custody in the early hours of Monday following an extended standoff, during which he discharged firearms at officers responding to a disturbance report at a residence on Clark Avenue's 700 block, as detailed in a report by Jessica Pebsworth, the communications director for the city of Lufkin.
Jason Penick, aged 47, was apprehended "a short while ago," Pebsworth stated in a report issued around 3 a.m., and is now facing charges of aggravated assault against a public servant.
"The incident unfolded Sunday afternoon as a disturbance, with the situation intensifying when the individual opened fire on arriving officers," Pebsworth explained in her initial report. "Subsequently, he barricaded himself inside the residence, while other occupants were safely evacuated."
As of early Monday, it remained unclear whether Penick was a resident of the home or his relationship with the evacuated occupants. Pebsworth mentioned that further details would be provided by the department later in the day.
During the standoff, gas canisters were deployed into the residence, leading to mistaken reports of additional gunfire, Pebsworth clarified.
Numerous law enforcement agencies, including the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the State Police SWAT Team, provided assistance during the operation.
"We extend our gratitude to all the agencies involved in the successful resolution of the incident," Pebsworth expressed. As of 4 a.m. Monday, Penick had not been booked into the Angelina County Jail.
