Former Celtic midfielder Landry Nguemo has tragically passed away at the age of 38 following a road accident near his hometown of Obala, Cameroon. 

Nguemo, a former Cameroonian international, had a distinguished footballing career, playing for several notable clubs including Nancy, Celtic, Bordeaux, Saint-Étienne, Akhisar Belediyespor, Kayserispor, and Kongsvinger.


Nguemo moved to Celtic Park at the beginning of the 2009/10 season on a loan deal, making a significant impact during his time under the management of Tony Mowbray. 

During his one-season stint with the Scottish giants, he made 43 appearances, showcasing his skill and determination on the field. His performances were well-received by the fans, leaving a lasting impression at the club.

Internationally, Nguemo was a key figure for the Cameroon national team, earning 41 caps between 2006 and 2014. He established himself as a regular in the Indomitable Lions’ midfield, contributing to the team’s efforts in various competitions and earning respect and admiration from both teammates and opponents.

News of Nguemo's passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from the football community. French sports newspaper L'Equipe reported that Nguemo was involved in a fatal road accident, leading to his untimely death. The tragedy has resonated deeply, with many expressing their sorrow and condolences for a player who was much-loved and respected.

Saint-Étienne, one of Nguemo's former clubs, issued a heartfelt statement mourning his loss. The statement, translated, reads: “Landry Nguemo has left us. Far too soon, far too abruptly. 

ASSE mourns one of its own. To all his loved ones, we send our most sincere condolences.” This sentiment reflects the high regard in which Nguemo was held at the club and among its supporters.

From a Celtic perspective, the website 67 Hail Hail also extended thoughts and love to Nguemo's family, highlighting the profound impact he had during his brief tenure at the club.
