During Tuesday morning rush hour along I-635 in Northeast Dallas, multiple car crashes resulted in injuries and significant disruption. The scene, as described by police in an arrest warrant affidavit, involved several Good Samaritans being run over by their own vehicles and a bystander being stabbed while attempting to confront the suspect.
Three victims were hospitalized, with one in critical condition. The incident caused all westbound lanes of the highway at Forest Lane to be shut down for over four hours. The suspect, identified as Angel Zamora Moreno, 26, was arrested after bystanders managed to hold him down until police arrived.
Moreno faces multiple charges, including seven counts of aggravated assault, two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and one count of criminal mischief.
The sequence of events began around 7 a.m. when Moreno, driving a gold Toyota Camry, sideswiped several vehicles before crashing into an 18-wheeler. A Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) worker and one of the crash victims stopped to assist.
Witnesses reported that Moreno exited his vehicle, retrieved an eight-inch fixed-blade knife from his trunk, and attempted to attack a female driver, who managed to lock herself in her car.
Moreno then jumped on the hood and windshield of another stopped vehicle, damaging it before the driver sped away, causing Moreno to fall off. A man with a metal pipe then confronted Moreno, who stabbed the man multiple times before being struck on the head with the pipe.
During the altercation, a pickup truck driver attempted to transport the stabbing victim to a hospital, but Moreno commandeered the TxDOT worker's truck and rammed the pickup. Despite this, the pickup driver managed to reach the hospital. Meanwhile, Moreno used the stolen TxDOT truck to run over the TxDOT worker and ram another vehicle involved in the initial crash.
A medical worker who witnessed the incident tried to help, but Moreno stole her car and chased her across the freeway, eventually running her over and dragging her across two lanes. Another witness intervened by stopping the car's ignition, allowing bystanders to subdue Moreno until police arrived.
Dallas Fire-Rescue transported three victims to the hospital, with the stabbing victim in critical condition and the other two in stable condition. The incident caused significant traffic delays, with footage showing several damaged vehicles.
Moreno was identified through his California ID and was found to have a recent address in Plano, though he had not lived there for about a month according to his uncle.
