A ranger was injured and hospitalized after a shooting in Yellowstone National Park that occurred from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, according to a press release from the National Park Service (NPS). The incident resulted in the death of an armed individual who had reportedly been making threats.
The shooting took place in Canyon Village, a central area in the park known for its campground, lodge, and visitor’s center. In response to the incident, a portion of the area around Canyon Lodge has been closed for an investigation, which is being led by the FBI with support from NPS special agents.
Rangers were initially called to the scene on Wednesday after receiving reports of a person with a firearm making threats. When rangers attempted to communicate with the individual, an exchange of gunfire ensued between the subject and law enforcement rangers, as stated in the press release.
The NPS has not released the name of the armed individual who died in what they are referring to as a “significant law enforcement incident.”
