Obituary: Sarah Delaney (1980-2024)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sarah Delaney, a beloved resident of Chicago, IL, formerly of New Palestine, Indiana. Sarah passed away on July 24, 2024, at the age of 44, after a courageous battle with cancer.


Sarah was born on February 15, 1980, in New Palestine, Indiana. She was the cherished daughter of Robert and Mary Delaney. From a young age, Sarah exhibited a passion for learning and a deep curiosity about the world around her. 

She graduated with honors from New Palestine High School in 1998 and went on to earn a degree in English Literature from Indiana University in 2002. Her love for literature and education was a defining aspect of her life.

In 2005, Sarah moved to Chicago, where she pursued a career in education. She worked as an English teacher at Lincoln Park High School, where she inspired countless students with her enthusiasm, dedication, and innovative teaching methods. 

Her commitment to her students and her ability to make literature come alive in the classroom earned her numerous accolades and the respect of her colleagues. Sarah's impact extended beyond her professional life. 

She was a dedicated volunteer at local libraries and literacy programs, always striving to make a difference in her community. Her warm and caring nature endeared her to everyone she met. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering positivity, even in the face of her illness.

Sarah's battle with cancer began in 2020. Despite the challenges, she faced her diagnosis with remarkable strength and grace. She continued to teach and volunteer for as long as she was able, finding joy in her work and the people she loved. Her resilience and determination were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Sarah is survived by her parents, Robert and Mary Delaney; her siblings, Michael Delaney and Laura Thompson; her nieces and nephews, and a host of friends and former students who will cherish her memory forever.

A memorial service celebrating Sarah's life will be held at Lincoln Park High School on August 3, 2024, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or a local literacy program in Sarah's honor.
