Laurie Lindeen, a beloved figure in the Twin Cities music community, has died at the age of 62. Lindeen, known for her role as the singer and guitarist for the all-female rock group Zuzu’s Petals, passed away on Monday, July 1, due to a brain aneurysm.


Lindeen’s influence on the music scene in the Twin Cities and beyond was profound. Zuzu’s Petals, formed in the late 1980s, quickly became a staple in the Minneapolis music scene. 

The band, known for its raw and energetic sound, consisted of Lindeen, drummer Linda Pitmon, and bassist Coleen Elwood. They released two full-length albums, "When No One’s Looking" (1992) and "The Music of Your Life" (1994), which garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.


Lindeen’s songwriting often touched on themes of personal struggle, resilience, and empowerment, resonating deeply with listeners. Her distinctive voice and guitar work were integral to the band’s sound, and her stage presence was magnetic. Zuzu’s Petals toured extensively, sharing stages with notable acts and leaving a lasting impression wherever they played.

Beyond her music career, Lindeen was also a talented writer. She authored the memoir "Petal Pusher: A Rock and Roll Cinderella Story" in 2007, which chronicled her experiences in the music industry and her journey with multiple sclerosis. 

The memoir was well-received, praised for its candidness and humor. Lindeen’s ability to convey her story with such authenticity and wit endeared her to readers and further cemented her legacy as a multifaceted artist.

Her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians, fans, and friends. Many have taken to social media to share memories and express their sorrow at the loss of such a vibrant and influential figure. 

Linda Pitmon, Lindeen’s bandmate from Zuzu’s Petals, shared a heartfelt message, recalling their time together and the impact Lindeen had on her life and the lives of many others.

Lindeen’s contributions to the Twin Cities music community and her influence on female musicians are undeniable. Her talent, resilience, and spirit have left an indelible mark on all who knew her and appreciated her work.

Laurie Lindeen is survived by her husband, musician Paul Westerberg, and their son Johnny. Her memory will live on through her music, her writing, and the countless lives she touched during her remarkable career.
