It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Major General Josue "Joe" Robles Jr., USA (Ret.), former CEO of USAA. Joe Robles, a distinguished leader and dedicated public servant, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of exemplary service and leadership.
Joe Robles joined the Genesis Wealth Management Advisory Board in 2019, bringing with him a wealth of experience and wisdom. His contributions to the board were invaluable, reflecting his lifelong commitment to excellence and his unwavering dedication to service.
Robles retired from USAA in 2015 after a remarkable tenure of seven years as president and CEO. Under his leadership, USAA, a FORTUNE 150 financial services company known for its exceptional service to military families since 1922, continued to flourish. His tenure at USAA began long before his role as CEO; he served as a board member from 1990 to 1994 while on active duty and joined USAA full-time in 1994, initially serving as CFO. His leadership as president and CEO from 2007 to 2015 was marked by significant growth and innovation, further solidifying USAA's reputation as a premier financial services provider.
Robles' illustrious career began in the U.S. Army, which he joined in 1966. Over the next 28 years, he served with distinction in various command and staff positions. His service included active duty posts in Korea, Vietnam, Germany, and Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm in the Middle East. Among his many roles, he served as the director of the Army budget and as commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division, known as the Big Red One.
Beyond his military and corporate achievements, Joe Robles was a committed community leader. He served on the boards of directors for several organizations, including DTE Energy, the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System, the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital Foundation, San Antonio’s Early Childhood Education Municipal Development Corporation, and the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. His contributions to these organizations reflected his deep commitment to improving the lives of others and fostering community development.
Robles held a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from Kent State University and a master’s degree in business administration from Indiana State University. His military education included the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the Spanish Army General Staff College, and the U.S. Naval War College.
