Dr. Mark Opperman, a distinguished veterinarian and renowned veterinary practice manager, passed away recently in Evergreen, Colorado, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and dedication in the field of veterinary practice management. 


As the founder and owner of VMC Inc., a prominent veterinary consulting firm, Dr. Opperman profoundly impacted the veterinary community across North America.

Dr. Opperman’s firm, VMC Inc., was instrumental in shaping the management practices of over 800 veterinary hospitals. His expertise encompassed a wide range of services including associate hiring, partnership formation, exit strategies, employee issues, and enhancing profitability and efficiency. 

His insights and guidance helped countless veterinary practices optimize their operations and improve their overall performance. An accomplished speaker and educator, Dr. Opperman shared his knowledge and experience on a global scale. 

He lectured at prestigious veterinary meetings such as the Fetch dvm360 conference (formerly known as CVC), the North American Veterinary Conference, the World Small Animal Veterinary Conference, and the Denmark Annual Congress. 

His presentations at these conferences were highly regarded, reflecting his deep understanding of veterinary practice management and his commitment to advancing the field.

Dr. Opperman’s contributions extended beyond consulting and lecturing. He was a pioneer in veterinary practice management education, founding the Veterinary Hospital Managers Association (VHMA) and serving as its president until 1993. 

His leadership in the VHMA was pivotal in establishing standards and best practices for veterinary practice management. Additionally, through his VMC School of Veterinary Practice Management, he trained more than 250 practice managers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their roles.
