Coronado Mall Shooting Today - Shots Fired at Coronado Mall, Security Guard Shot, Suspect in Custody

At around 12:55 PM, shots rang out at Coronado Mall near the Footlocker, leading to a tense situation. A security guard was shot and their condition remains unknown, though they were swiftly transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Importantly, this is not an active shooter situation. The suspect, a 17-year-old male, is already in custody.
Currently, there is a substantial police presence near various mall locations, including Aspen Dental, Saggios, Fuddruckers, Footlocker, and other areas, as authorities work to secure the scene and gather more information.

According to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), the incident began when the teenager was found sleeping in the Fuddruckers restaurant.

Security personnel asked him to leave the premises, but as he was being escorted out, the situation escalated.

The teen produced a firearm and fired shots, striking the security guard in the leg. Despite the injury, the security guard is reportedly in stable condition and alert.

After the shooting, the teenager fled across the street to a nearby business complex. APD officers quickly responded, locating the suspect and apprehending him.

During the arrest, the teen attempted to discard the firearm by throwing it under a vehicle. However, the police successfully recovered the weapon and took the suspect into custody without further incident.

We have reporters on the scene striving to uncover additional details as the situation develops. The large police presence aims to ensure the safety of mall patrons and facilitate a thorough investigation into the events leading up to the shooting.
