215 Freeway Accident Today, Motorist Dies After Crash Near Major Riverside Interchange

A series of tragic collisions near a bustling Riverside interchange resulted in one fatality and prompted the closure of a section of the 91 Freeway for several hours on Tuesday morning. The accidents created significant disruption and have left the community in shock.

The chaotic series of events began shortly before 1 a.m. on the northbound 215 Freeway near Center Street, where a pileup involving as many as eight vehicles occurred. Emergency responders were swiftly on the scene, working diligently to manage the situation and provide assistance to those involved. According to freelance media firm OnScene.TV, one individual had to be extricated from a vehicle. This person was subsequently transported to a local hospital with injuries that, while serious, were not specified in detail.

As the authorities were dealing with the initial pileup and attempting to divert the increasing traffic, a second collision took place at around 2 a.m. This incident involved an SUV crashing into the back of a semi-truck on the eastbound 91 Freeway, near the 60/215 Freeway interchange and close to the initial crash site. Tragically, one person involved in this second collision was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The impact of these collisions was significant, prompting the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to issue a SigAlert for the closure of the northbound 91 lanes near the interchange. The closure was necessary to allow emergency personnel to conduct a thorough investigation and clear the wreckage from the roadway. The affected stretch of freeway remained closed for several hours, causing considerable traffic delays and forcing commuters to seek alternative routes.

Throughout the early morning hours, crews worked tirelessly to manage the scene, provide medical assistance, and clear the debris. By around 7 a.m., the crash scene was sufficiently cleared, allowing the freeway lanes to be reopened and normal traffic flow to resume.

The series of collisions near the Riverside interchange serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present on busy freeways, particularly during the early hours when visibility can be compromised, and drivers may be less alert. The CHP is continuing its investigation into the exact causes of both collisions and is appealing for any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage to come forward to aid in their inquiries.
