UPDATE: Oaks Mall Gainesville FL Shooting : Active police investigation ongoing at Oaks Mall

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The Gainesville Police Department has issued a statement urging citizens to stay clear of the vicinity surrounding the Oaks Mall.

Public Information Officer Brandon Hatzel emphasized the importance of public safety and the need for cooperation during this period of heightened alert.

In a press release, Officer Hatzel clarified that, as of now, there is no evidence to suggest the presence of an active shooter at the Oaks Mall.

"We are currently investigating the situation and want to assure the community that their safety is our top priority," Hatzel stated.

"While we have not found any indications of an active threat, we are continuing to thoroughly assess the area to ensure all bases are covered."

The advisory comes after initial reports and social media posts suggested a possible active shooter scenario at the popular shopping destination.

These reports quickly spread, causing concern among local residents and prompting an immediate response from law enforcement.

Multiple police units were dispatched to the mall to conduct a detailed search and to reassure patrons and staff.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a swift and organized police presence, with officers systematically checking the premises and calming anxious shoppers.
"It was a scary moment, but seeing the police handle it so efficiently was reassuring," said one mall-goer.

While the authorities have found no substantial evidence to confirm the early reports of gunfire or an armed individual, they are maintaining a cautious stance. The mall and its surrounding areas remain under close surveillance as part of precautionary measures.

In the meantime, Gainesville Police are advising residents to avoid the area to facilitate ongoing investigations and to prevent any unnecessary disruptions.

"We appreciate the public’s cooperation and patience as we work through this situation," Officer Hatzel added. "We will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available."

Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to local news outlets and official Gainesville Police Department social media channels for real-time updates and further instructions.

The department remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the Gainesville community and is working diligently to resolve the situation.

More details on this developing story will be shared as they emerge.
