The tragic incident occurred near Fernald Point in Montecito, where 15-year-old Ryan Bradley Chapman of Santa Barbara was fatally struck by an Amtrak Pacific Surfline train.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, represented by Raquel Zick, released Chapman's identity following the incident, which took place around 1:45 p.m. on a Wednesday.
Chapman was among a group of teenagers walking along the tracks towards a nearby birthday party when the accident happened.
Despite efforts including CPR by a nurse at the scene, Chapman was pronounced dead upon arrival of emergency responders. He was a student at Santa Barbara High School.
In response to the tragedy, Santa Barbara High School planned to open a "compassion center" in the Alumni Room from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday to support students and their families.
The Sheriff's Office had received a 911 call reporting the incident at 1:41 p.m., and shortly thereafter, deputies confirmed Chapman's death at 1:53 p.m.
