HOUSTON -- More details are emerging about the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl whose body was found in a creek in north Houston on Monday.
Jocelyn Nungaray was discovered near the North Freeway, not far from her home, after investigators believe she snuck out around 10 p.m. on Sunday. Her mother last saw her when she went to bed, according to police reports.
ABC Houston affiliate KTRK spoke with Nungaray's grandmother, who expressed the family’s desire for justice.
"We really want justice for her. We are asking for everyone's help," she said, describing Jocelyn as an incredibly kind and loving girl. The family had recently returned from their annual vacation at a state park.
It has been reported that Jocelyn was talking to her 13-year-old boyfriend on the phone around midnight when he heard her conversing with two adults.
On Tuesday evening, Houston police released images of two male persons of interest in the case.
"There will be a report issued shortly with very bad, horrific circumstances," said Houston Mayor John Whitmire on Tuesday.
Investigators are actively seeking surveillance video that could lead them to the perpetrator.
Billie Jackson was driving home after dropping her husband off at work on Monday morning when she made the disturbing discovery.
"I drove past, and when I looked up the creek, I thought it was a mannequin. I did a U-turn, stopped on the bridge, put my flashers on, looked down, and realized it was someone. I parked right here and called 911 immediately," she recounted.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences determined that Nungaray died by strangulation. Authorities are urging anyone with information about her death to contact Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
