A woman shot two people, believed to be her parents, outside of a house in Bedford, Massachusetts, on Thursday morning, leaving one dead and another with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Jessica Cavallaro, 24, was arrested on charges including murder and assault and battery, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said. Cavallaro allegedly opened fire on her parents shortly after 8 a.m., prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
The incident unfolded in a quiet residential neighborhood, leaving the community in shock. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and seeing emergency services rush to the scene. Police quickly apprehended Cavallaro at the site of the shooting.
The identity of the victims has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The surviving victim was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently in critical condition.
Jessica Cavallaro was due to be arraigned later Thursday in Concord District Court. It wasn't immediately clear if she had an attorney who could speak to her arrest. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the shooting and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
The tragedy has shaken the small town of Bedford, with community members expressing their disbelief and sorrow over the events. Counseling services are being made available to residents affected by the incident.
