Dominic "Dom" Tomaino Obituary : South Range student killed in rollover crash on Ohio Turnpike in Springfield Township

Tragedy struck the South Range Local School District as news emerged of a fatal rollover crash on the Ohio Turnpike in Springfield Township, claiming the life of 16-year-old student Dominic Tomaino. The somber confirmation came from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, underscoring the heartbreaking loss experienced by the community on Wednesday evening.

Emergency responders swiftly mobilized just before 8:30 p.m. to the scene near the Springfield Road bridge along the westbound lanes, mere moments after the crash occurred. According to troopers, the incident involved a single vehicle that collided with a guardrail.

Investigations revealed that a silver 2009 Volvo S60 traveling eastbound veered off the roadway, impacting the guardrail before careening across the lanes and through the median grass. Tragically, Tomaino was ejected through the sunroof during the collision sequence. The vehicle ultimately crossed the westbound lanes before coming to a halt on the shoulder of the road.

Regrettably, Tomaino was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident, though alcohol was ruled out as a contributing factor, according to troopers' assessments.

South Range Superintendent Jarred Zapolnik expressed condolences, acknowledging the profound grief enveloping those who knew and loved Tomaino. The district rallied to provide support, with intervention teams offering counseling and resources to help students navigate the emotional aftermath of the tragedy.

The impact of the crash reverberated beyond the immediate scene, causing significant traffic disruptions along the westbound lanes, with congestion stretching for miles. However, authorities managed to reopen the road, albeit with limited access near the crash site, as normalcy gradually returned amidst the community's mourning.
