Damian Haglund, a 14-year-old eighth grader at Mount Horeb Middle School, tragically lost his life after bringing a rifle to school. Despite the swift response of Mount Horeb police officers, who fatally shot the armed student before he could enter the school, no other individuals were harmed in the incident.
Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul confirmed the identity of the student and disclosed that the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave, as per standard procedure following the use of deadly force.
While details regarding the circumstances leading to the shooting remain undisclosed, an emergency alert warning residents of an active shooter at the middle school underscored the gravity of the situation.
The close-knit community of Mount Horeb, comprising roughly 7,700 residents, was deeply shaken by the event, prompting profound emotional reactions from community members and students alike.
The Mount Horeb Area School District responded by canceling classes for a second consecutive day, prioritizing the emotional well-being of its students and staff. Additionally, the scheduled high school prom has been rescheduled in light of the tragic events.
