Eight people were shot and killed, and five others arrested during a sting operation on a group suspected of planning a cash-in-transit robbery in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Monday night.
The operation was the result of a coordinated effort by various law enforcement agencies, including members of the Hawks, intelligence operatives, the Special Task Force, and officials from a security company, acting on critical information about the planned heist.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa stated that the team moved in on the suspects in the Town Two area of Khayelitsha.
Upon approaching, the suspects opened fire on the police, who then retaliated. The ensuing gunfight resulted in the deaths of eight suspects and the arrest of five others.
The authorities seized a significant cache of weapons from the suspects. This included seven AK-47 rifles, two R5 rifles, one R4 rifle, one Dashprod rifle, two 9mm pistols, and three improvised explosive devices, as well as numerous ammunition magazines.
The recovery of these weapons indicates the suspects were heavily armed and prepared for a violent confrontation.
The operation underscores the ongoing efforts by South African law enforcement to combat violent crime, particularly cash-in-transit heists, which have been a persistent issue in the region.
The successful interception of this planned robbery likely prevented significant loss of life and property. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, aiming to dismantle the criminal networks involved in such high-risk crimes and ensure the safety of citizens and businesses in the area.
