On Sunday evening, an SUV crashed into the TJ Maxx store in downtown Farmington when a 71-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle, according to officials. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
The incident occurred at around 6:20 p.m., as detailed in a news release from Public Safety Director Bob Houhanisin. The vehicle drove through the store’s front entrance and came to rest several feet inside the building against a support column.
Sarah Davies of Farmington was shopping with her 9-year-old daughter, Grace, when the crash happened. “At first, I heard this strange noise, kind of like a muffled cracking — different from anything I’d ever heard before,” Davies recalled. “Then I looked toward the sound — the front doors — and saw the glass breaking.”
Davies described how the store’s ceiling began to fall as the SUV “came barreling in so incredibly fast,” smashing through the front doors and several clothing racks before stopping diagonally. “It all happened so quickly,” she said.
Grace was extremely frightened and crying as they hurried to leave the store, following directions from store personnel. “We were told to exit immediately,” Davies said. “I was afraid the building might collapse.”
Outside, a crowd had gathered, wondering what had happened. “Everybody was just staring,” Davies added. For further updates, visit our website or contact Public Safety Director Bob Houhanisin.
