Former Maryland Men's Lacrosse Player Jimmy "Jim" Beardmore passed away this week. He was a highly respected figure in the lacrosse community, known for his exceptional skills as both a player and a coach. He was an All-American lacrosse goalie and made significant contributions to the sport throughout his career. As the son of the legendary Clayton "Buddy" Beardmore, a former University of Maryland coach and Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, Jim was deeply rooted in lacrosse tradition and excellence.
Jim Beardmore attended The Severn School in Severna Park, Maryland, where he began to build his reputation as a formidable lacrosse player. Following his graduation, he continued his education and athletic career at the University of Maryland. It was here that he truly shone, becoming one of the top lacrosse goalies in the nation.
In 1987, Beardmore's outstanding performance earned him the prestigious Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award, which is presented to the NCAA's Goalie of the Year. His skills on the field also garnered him first-team All-American honors, recognition as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Year, and a first-team All-ACC mention. These accolades highlighted his dominance and influence in collegiate lacrosse.
After his collegiate success, Beardmore transitioned to professional lacrosse, playing five seasons in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League. He played with the Washington Wave and the Pittsburgh Bulls, where his talent continued to impress fans and teammates alike.
Jim Beardmore's passion for lacrosse extended beyond his playing years into a fruitful coaching career. He served as head coach for the Denver Outlaws during the 2007 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) season.
