Actor Nicholas Ball has passed away at the age of 78, his agent announced.
Ball was known for his role as gang lord Terry Bates in the BBC soap EastEnders, where he infamously attacked Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) and smashed up the Queen Victoria pub. He also portrayed Garry Ryan, the chairman of the club and ex-rock star, in the drama Footballers’ Wives.
In a statement, Ball’s agent confirmed that he "passed away following a short illness," highlighting that his "successful acting career on stage and screen spanned an impressive six decades."
Ball was the lead in the private detective show Hazell, playing the main character James “Jim” Hazell, a cockney former policeman originally created by Gordon Williams and footballer Terry Venables, who wrote under the pseudonym PB Yuill.
His television appearances included episodes of crime shows such as Jonathan Creek, Hustle, Heartbeat, and Bergerac, as well as comedies like Red Dwarf and The Young Ones, and the drama The Crezz.
On the big screen, Ball had roles in various films including the war drama Overlord, the thriller Rogue Male, the crime drama The Krays: Dead Man Walking, and the Jilly Cooper adaptation The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous.
Most recently, Ball filmed the 2024 rural-set drama The Kingdom By The Sea, co-starring with Coronation Street actress Rula Lenska.
He is survived by his widow Ayda. Ball was previously married to Pamela Stephenson, comedian Sir Billy Connolly’s second wife, whom he met on the set of Not The Nine O’Clock News.
