June 11, 2024 - The community of Botkins is mourning the loss of one of its own, as Farmer Craig Barhorst tragically passed away in a farm accident on Sunday, June 9th, 2024. He was 38 years old. Craig Barhorst was born on May 6, 1986, in St. Marys, to Bob and Tammy (Brown) Barhorst, who survive him in Anna.
From an early age, Craig's life was intertwined with the rhythm of the farm. Growing up on a crop production family farm, his passion for farming was evident to all who knew him. He lived and breathed the farming way of life. Whether he was playing with toy tractors in the dirt or operating a real one at a young age, Craig considered himself incredibly fortunate to be living out his dream on the family farm.
Craig's dedication to agriculture extended beyond his own farm. He was deeply involved in organizations such as 4-H and FFA during his formative years, where he learned invaluable lessons about responsibility, hard work, and stewardship of the land. His involvement in raising and showing livestock was a testament to his commitment to excellence in agriculture.
After graduating from Botkins High School in 2004, Craig pursued higher education at Wright State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Despite the opportunities that beckoned elsewhere, Craig's heart remained on the family farm. He returned home to Botkins, eager to contribute to the legacy of agricultural excellence that had been cultivated by generations before him.
In Botkins, Craig wasn't just a farmer; he was a pillar of the community. His friendly demeanor, genuine kindness, and unwavering work ethic endeared him to all who knew him. He was always ready to lend a helping hand or share his wealth of knowledge about farming practices with fellow farmers.
Craig Barhorst leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the fields he tended. He leaves behind a loving family, a tight-knit community, and a lasting impact on the agricultural industry. Though his passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, his memory will continue to inspire all those who knew him.
