Yesterday, the news of the passing of former Olathe superintendent Dr. Marlin Berry reached us, plunging us into deep sorrow. Our hearts go out to the Berry family during this challenging time. Dr. Berry's departure marks the loss of an esteemed figure in the realm of education, yet we take solace in the enduring legacy he has left behind, evident in his profound impact on Olathe, Kansas, and even Arkansas.
Dr. Berry commenced his journey with Olathe Public Schools in July 2007, assuming the role of assistant superintendent. By 2010, he ascended to become our district’s fifth superintendent, a position he held until 2016. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Berry seamlessly integrated into the fabric of the Olathe community, renowned not only for his wit, often showcased in his welcome back videos to staff, but more importantly, for his unwavering commitment to nurturing young minds and forging genuine connections with individuals. His leadership, marked by inspiration and empathy, garnered recognition not only locally but statewide, culminating in his crowning as Kansas Superintendent of the Year in 2013.
With over 40 years dedicated to the field of education, we consider ourselves blessed to have had Dr. Berry grace our halls for six of those years. Under his stewardship, our district witnessed remarkable growth in enrollment, coupled with the inauguration of two pivotal establishments: Mission Trail Middle School and Millbrooke Elementary. Additionally, Dr. Berry played a foundational role in the conceptualization and realization of Olathe West High School. Despite the rapid expansion within our community, Dr. Berry's leadership ensured that we preserved the intimate, "small-town" ambiance synonymous with Olathe. His decision to transition our district's name from The Olathe School District to Olathe Public Schools underscored his belief in the intrinsic connection between our schools and the broader community, emphasizing our collective responsibility in shaping the future of our students.
Reflecting on Dr. Berry's legacy, Superintendent Dr. Brent Yeager remarks, “Marlin has been a true mentor to me during my time as an educator and leader here in Olathe. It was such an honor to work closely with him and learn from him." Dr. Yeager, who, like Dr. Berry, commenced his Olathe journey in 2007, expresses gratitude for Dr. Berry's belief in him, citing his pivotal role in Dr. Yeager's professional development. Dr. Berry's investment in the Olathe staff transcends individual anecdotes, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives.
As a unified Olathe family, we recognize the collective desire to extend condolences and support to the Berry family. To facilitate this, we have reached out to the Berry family and offered assistance in coordinating cards for those wishing to convey messages of solace. We encourage you to send your cards to the Education Center, where they will be collected and conveyed to the Berry family. Let us stand together in remembrance of Dr. Berry, holding his family in our thoughts as we extend our deepest sympathies to them.
