Dmitri Thompson Orlando FL Obituary : Basketball Player Dmitri “Meech” Thompson Death : Dmitri Thompson, Elon Sport Management Alum Dies

The former student of Elon Sport Management, Dmitri "Meech" Thompson, ia pro basketball player is dead. As a result of his high-flying performance throughout his tenure at Elon, Dmitri Thompson concluded his career as one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the program.



As a native of Orlando, Florida, Thompson (also known as Meech) made history on January 7, 2018, when he scored 18 points in Elon's victory over Hofstra. This accomplishment made him the 41st player in the history of the school to achieve 1,000 points in his career.


When Thompson's career came to an end, he had participated in 129 games, had 90 starts, and finished with 1,193 career points, which placed him in 28th place on Elon's all-time scoring record. While playing with the Phoenix, Thompson scored 9.2 points per game on average throughout his career. 


During his four seasons, he not only scored the ball at an efficient rate of 47.5% (448-944), but he also grabbed a total of 609 rebounds, which is equivalent to an average of 4.7 per game. 


Thompson had the best season of his career as a senior in 2017–18, scoring 12.3 points per game, which placed second on the team and was nearly four points more than his junior season. This was the best season of his career. 


During the 2017–18 season, he also recorded the highest number of rebounds per game of his whole career while wearing the maroon and gold. During his tenure at Elon, Thompson was noted for his high-flying performance, as evidenced by the fact that several of his dunks were included in SportsCenter's Top-10 Plays. 


As a senior, he competed in the 2018 Dark Horse Dunker Fan Vote and made it to the semifinals. However, he was eliminated from the competition two rounds before arriving at the 2018 State Farm College Slam Dunk Championships. 


Throughout his career, Thompson was a fantastic student-athlete who also excelled in the classroom. He was the recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award.
