The family has confirmed that the young woman tragically shot and killed on Kennesaw State University's campus over the weekend was 21-year-old Alasia Franklin. School authorities also verified her identity and shared photographs provided by her family, one of which depicted Franklin as a member of KSU's Homecoming Court.
Her father, Bobby Franklin, shared that she was a third-year student aiming for a nursing career. The university reported that a dispute led to the fatal shooting of a female student in front of the Austin Residence Complex on Saturday afternoon. Franklin's father suggested that the altercation might have originated from domestic issues.
At approximately 4 p.m. that Saturday, KSU Police issued a campus-wide secure-in-place alert following reports of an armed intruder. By 4:43 p.m., the university's emergency management confirmed that the suspect, Samuel Harris, posed no further threat to the campus.
Harris, who is not affiliated with KSU, was apprehended by Cobb County Police and subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a crime. KSU President Kathy S. Schwaig expressed condolences to the victim's family and friends, acknowledging the immense difficulty of the situation.
The university is actively providing assistance and support to those impacted by the tragedy. KSU Counseling and Psychological Services continue to offer on-campus support from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
