More than 40 people still stranded day after deadly cable car accident in Turkey

More than 40 people were left stranded in cable cars above a mountain in southern Turkey for 19 hours after a pod hit a pole, resulting in one fatality and seven injuries.

The incident took place at the Tunektepe cable car near Antalya during the Eid al-Fitr holiday. Rescue operations, involving 543 first responders and seven helicopters, persisted throughout the night and into the morning.

By Saturday morning, 128 citizens had been rescued, while efforts to rescue the remaining 43 individuals continued.

The casualties included a 54-year-old Turkish man who lost his life and six Turkish citizens, along with one Kyrgyz national, who sustained injuries.

The injured, including two children, were evacuated by Coast Guard helicopters. Dramatic images in Turkish media depicted the damaged car dangling precariously from dislodged cables on the mountainside.

The cable car, operated by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, shuttles tourists from Konyaalti beach to a summit restaurant and viewing platform.

Completed in 2017, the cable car undergoes regular inspections, including a major assessment at the start of each year.

An investigation by the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office is underway, with an expert commission tasked with determining the cause of the incident, involving mechanical and electrical engineers, as well as health and safety experts.
