Corrections Officer Killed in Tragic Accident at Firing Range, Ohio Officials Say

The tragic loss of Lt. Rodney Osborne at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility during a training exercise on April 9 has left the community mourning. 


According to Annette Chambers-Smith, Director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Lt. Osborne was shot and killed during a training exercise at the Corrections Training Academy tactical firing range. The incident, labeled as a tragic accident, is currently under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Despite the valiant efforts of bystanders who performed CPR on Lt. Osborne after he was shot in the chest, he succumbed to his injuries. The 911 calls obtained by The Columbus Dispatch reveal the frantic moments following the accident.

Lt. Osborne's dedication to his profession was evident through his 13 years of service at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. Just days before his untimely death, he was honored as the facility's employee of the year, highlighting his exemplary commitment and service. 

Lt. Osborne's involvement in the facility's honor guard, Special Response Team, and the statewide Special Tactics And Response team showcased his leadership and expertise in his field.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine paid tribute to Lt. Osborne by ordering U.S. and state flags at all Department of Rehabilitation and Correction facilities to be flown at half-staff on April 10. This gesture symbolizes the collective grief and respect for the fallen officer.

As the community grapples with this tragic loss, Director Chambers-Smith urged everyone to keep Lt. Osborne's wife, children, loved ones, and colleagues in their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time. 

The impact of his absence will be deeply felt not only by his family but also by his fellow team members and the wider correctional community.

Located in Scioto County, approximately 80 miles south of Columbus, the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility serves as a crucial institution within the state's corrections system. 

Lt. Osborne's death serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by corrections officers in the line of duty, emphasizing the need for ongoing safety measures and training protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
